What is moissanite?
Moissanite was discovered by Henri Moissan( thus the name Moissanite) in 1893 while he was examining rock samples from meteor crater in Arizona, USA. At first, he thought he discovered diamond crystals, but after multiple tests, the crystal he found in his 1893 discovery turned out to be silicon carbide.(silicon and carbon combined)
So, moissanite is a naturally occurring and laboratory-grown mineral made up of silicon carbide. Its occurrence in nature is extremely rare and has only been found in upper mantle rock and meteorites. Discoveries have shown moissanite occurs naturally as xenoliths, kimberlite, and lamproite.
Today, because of its rarity in nature, moissanite is lab grown without any environmental impact. Because of its durability and flexibility of its crystal structure, moissanite comes in the same variety of cuts, clarities and colours, as natural diamonds, which give jewellery designers a multitude of options and perfect stones to execute any wild imagination at the fraction of the price, compared to natural or Lab-Grown diamonds.
